Yesterday morning, a two-alarm fire broke out at the Greenleaf Senior Center, 1200 Delaware Ave SW. The careful work of D.C.’s Bravest, the D.C. Fire and Emergency Medical Services Department, and the Metropolitan Police Department resulted in two rescues and few injuries. D.C. Housing Authority, the Red Cross and other partners are working to find housing for residents in five units, now unliveable. One resident has lost everything.
All residents are safe, and today begins the start of recovery. We’re jumping in to help – on the ground this afternoon checking in with residents. In the coming days, we’ll also provide details for our effort to raise $10,000 and support this community in starting over after this tragedy.
We believe the Greenleaf Senior Center and its residents will make a full recovery, and together our efforts can get them there faster.
